At first glance, the Mazda CX-30’s new model update might seem like a subtle facelift. However, there’s some significant change under the hood: a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine promises improved drivability and fuel efficiency.
Thinking Outside the Downsizing Box
Mazda often takes a different path from other manufacturers. While many carmakers focus on downsizing engines to reduce fuel consumption, Mazda champions “rightsizing.” Their approach replaces the previous 2.0-liter with a bigger 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the new efficiency champion. It’s a nod to an older philosophy, evoking an era when bigger engines meant better performance without the need for turbos. Mazda’s belief: there’s no replacement for displacement.
If you’ve driven a larger engine, you know that its low-end power can provide a more relaxed driving experience. Mazda’s new 2.5L e-Skyactiv G 140 engine ups the displacement by 500 cubic centimeters, and while this bigger engine doesn’t shy away from modern tech, it’s all about enhancing efficiency. The engine features a mild hybrid system with an integrated starter generator (ISG), delivering an additional 5.1 kW (7 hp) and 48 Nm of torque, powered by a 0.216 kWh lithium-ion battery. These enhancements aid acceleration, smooth gear changes, and trim fuel consumption. Mazda also includes cylinder deactivation to further cut down on fuel usage, and it operates seamlessly during driving. The engine produces 103 kW (140 hp) and 238 Nm of torque.
A Smooth, Quiet Ride
To keep things smooth and refined, Mazda engineers have fitted the four-cylinder with balance shafts, reducing vibration and noise. The engine, with a compression ratio of 13.0:1 and a direct injection system with six-hole injectors, runs quietly with minimal vibration.
While it’s no powerhouse, the 2.5-liter provides plenty of pull for relaxed, steady driving. The lack of a turbo also means there’s no lag when accelerating. The combination of direct injection and high compression results in smooth performance, allowing the CX-30 to hit 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 194 km/h. However, at high RPMs, it can feel a bit breathless.
Fun and Functional Driving Experience
Data is one thing, but how a car feels is another. We tested the six-speed manual, which delivered a satisfying, precise feel reminiscent of Mazda’s MX-5. Automatic enthusiasts also benefit from the new engine, as the transmission software has been optimized to quickly upshift, further conserving fuel.
The CX-30’s suspension offers a pleasant balance: it’s comfortable with long suspension travel yet firm enough to avoid excessive body roll. The steering doesn’t quite offer MX-5-like feedback, but it’s accurate and well-suited for a compact SUV. On our test drive, we managed an average fuel consumption of 8.4 liters per 100 km, while Mazda estimates 6 liters per 100 km.
A Simple, Driver-Centric Interior
Inside, the CX-30 doesn’t overwhelm with excessive screens or tech overload. Instead, there’s a straightforward 10.25-inch infotainment screen controlled by a rotary dial, keeping the experience simple. Mazda’s graphics may lack flash, and the interface could benefit from a slight modernization.
The large round digital dials are designed to resemble traditional analog gauges, which adds a touch of familiarity. A head-up display rounds out the driver’s interface, and the cabin itself remains largely unchanged for the 2025 model year. The materials and layout are simple yet well-made, giving the CX-30 an airy, inviting feel. We tested the top-spec model priced at €33,040, while the base model starts at €28,940.
