When money is no object, anything is possible. The ruling family of Brunei, a Southeast Asian oil-rich nation, has long indulged in extravagant automotive whims. Since the 1980s, Sultan Hassan Bolkiah and his brother, Prince Jefri, have been known to order vehicles by the dozen, often with highly unusual customizations. Their collection is so vast that even they likely don’t know the full extent of it. Among their treasures, Bentley holds a special place, with 23 bespoke creations commissioned, bearing imaginative names like Camelot, Buccaneer, and Val d’Isere.
However, their most cherished model seems to be the Bentley Continental R, which inspired no fewer than seven derivatives. These included a station wagon variant (produced in a batch of 30) and a Supershort version with a wheelbase shortened by 10 cm—though the discarded lengths likely found their way back into the long-wheelbase versions.
Enter the „SuFaCon“: More Power, Baby
Among these creations, the standout was the Bentley Continental R „SuFaCon“, short for Super Fast Continental. The name alone hints at its purpose: more power. The standard Continental R’s 6.75-liter V8, producing a modest 325 PS, wasn’t enough for the Brunei royals. Even the later 426 PS Continental T failed to satisfy their need for speed. Enter the P300-modification, ordered by Prince Jefri. With larger turbos and various enhancements, the upgraded engine delivered an impressive 534 PS, bringing the Bentley much closer to their lofty standards.
In total, 14 units of the Continental R „SuFaCon“ were built.
A Four-Door Twist
One particular SuFaCon stands out even more—not for its power but for its form. This example is not the traditional two-door Continental R, but a rare four-door version. For Brunei’s elite, 19 of these four-door Continentals were made, all fitted with the potent P300 engine. The vehicle currently listed for sale through DK Engineering is notable not only for its condition, requiring significant restoration, but also because it’s likely the only example to have made its way to Europe.
The sale includes a sizable cache of spare parts, raising more questions than answers about how this car crossed borders. It’s a tale wrapped in secrecy—much like the rest of Brunei’s automotive empire.
The Mystery of Brunei’s Bespoke Bentleys
While the SuFaCon has earned its place in Bentley lore, it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Brunei’s royal family’s requests for custom cars often resulted in wildly unique creations, including the infamous Bentley Dominator SUV, of which six were commissioned in 1996. These bespoke models remain shrouded in mystery; Bentley has wisely refrained from releasing images of some of the more unconventional designs. Given the eccentricity of these commissions, it’s easy to see why.
For enthusiasts, the rarity and extravagance of the SuFaCon make it a fascinating chapter in Bentley’s history, even as it hints at the unbridled creativity that comes when limitless wealth meets automotive passion.
This four-door SuFaCon represents a rare glimpse into a world of excess, where even a Bentley could be reimagined into something utterly unique – and could be yours. If you are brave enough.
