Hyundai is turning up the heat with its electric performance models. For those who thought the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was thrilling enough, get ready for an even more dynamic creation. The compact RN24 prototype is here to give a sneak peek into Hyundai’s next adrenaline machine.
The current images may only show a bare-bones frame with a wide stance, chunky race tires, two racing seats, and a steering wheel, but there’s a lot more brewing under the surface. Fans of Hyundai’s N division can start getting excited for the brand’s upcoming generation of electric thrillers.
The RN24 concept merges the powertrain of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N with the rally-inspired engineering of Hyundai’s WRC models. More of a mobile testing lab than a finalized vehicle, the RN24 is Hyundai’s way of showcasing its ambitions to take electric performance to the next level. “Hyundai N is more than just a brand; it represents our commitment to innovation and high performance,” explains Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President and head of Genesis and Performance Development Tech Unit. “The RN24 stands as proof of our bold ambitions for the future.”
Compact Powerhouse with a Racing Edge
The RN24 packs the Ioniq 5 N’s impressive 478 kW (650 hp) electric powertrain into a compact, stripped-down B-segment chassis. With the wheelbase shortened by 34 cm compared to the standard model and retaining an 84 kWh battery, this compact powerhouse sits on a customized E-GMP platform with a high-rigidity suspension inspired by the Hyundai i20 WRC.
From the driver’s seat, various settings like power output, acceleration, regenerative braking, and torque distribution between the two electric motors (175 kW front and 303 kW rear) can all be fine-tuned using a Formula 1-style steering control. Weighing in at just under 1.9 tons, the RN24 can rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in a rapid 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 240 km/h.
Sound, Style, and Control
To match its powerful acceleration, the RN24 doesn’t skimp on sound. Equipped with a custom sound system, it uses two side speakers and rear wheel arches as resonators to create a distinct, visceral experience. And it’s not just about going fast; the RN24 is built to stay grounded, too. With touring car-style wings and spoilers, this prototype keeps its massive power firmly on the road. “The RN24 represents Hyundai N’s dedication to advancing electric motorsport technology, prioritizing the driving experience over raw specs,” says Joon Park, Vice President of the N Brand Management Group.
The RN24 isn’t just a concept; it’s Hyundai’s bold step toward an exciting future in electric performance.
