Lexus GX 550: Reaching New Heights

For those seeking enhanced performance and prestige, the Lexus GX 550, its more luxurious sibling, offers a compelling solution.

The freshly redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser impresses as a capable off-roader, but its powertrain may leave some buyers wanting more. For those seeking enhanced performance and prestige, the Lexus GX 550, its more luxurious sibling, offers a compelling alternative with a powerful V6 engine. Unfortunately, this premium SUV is currently exclusive to the U.S. Here’s our take after a first test drive.

A Luxurious Off-Road Sibling

The Toyota Land Cruiser 250 has struck a nostalgic chord with its boxy, rugged design, earning admiration akin to the Mercedes G-Class or Ford Bronco. However, buyers desiring greater luxury, a more refined image, and notably better performance will find their match in the Lexus GX 550.

Despite distinctive styling differences, such as a unique front fascia and more polished interior, the GX 550 shares clear familial ties with the Land Cruiser. The standout distinction lies under the hood. While European versions of the Land Cruiser make do with a capable but uninspiring four-cylinder diesel engine, the GX 550 boasts a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, delivering 256 kW / 349 PS and 650 Nm of torque from just 2,000 rpm. Despite its 2.5-ton curb weight, the GX offers brisk acceleration at virtually any speed. However, the electronically limited 180 km/h top speed might feel conservative for its class. U.S. buyers seem unfazed, and future versions in other markets could raise this cap to 200 km/h.

Ready for Any Terrain

For the first time, the Lexus GX aims to be as capable off-road as it is on. Designed to rival off-road legends like the Mercedes G-Class, Land Rover Defender, and Ford Bronco, the GX 550 is also a true match for its sibling, the Land Cruiser 250. Optional 33-inch all-terrain tires and rugged Overtrail trims bolster its off-road credentials.

The GX offers six road-focused driving modes and an array of off-road settings, including low-range gearing and locking differentials, to conquer virtually any terrain. In particularly challenging conditions, its Crawl Control system takes charge, allowing the vehicle to move forward or reverse at preset speeds while managing engine power and brake pressure to reduce wheel slippage. Built on the robust GA-F platform, which shares DNA with the larger Lexus LX 600, the GX provides a luxurious on-road ride alongside its formidable off-road capabilities.

Interior: Roomy and Refined

The GX’s cabin offers a harmonious blend of space, luxury, and practicality. With configurations for six or seven seats, it features meticulous craftsmanship, a 14-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and modern controls. Numerous storage options, USB ports for all passengers, and ventilated leather seats front and rear enhance the overall experience. The serene interior owes much to the V6’s quiet operation, acoustic glass, and a refined 10-speed automatic transmission, which seamlessly distributes power to all four wheels based on driving conditions and terrain.

Voice-activated commands via „Hey Lexus“ add convenience, though this feature might feel slightly intrusive for a luxury vehicle. Meanwhile, the 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system envelops passengers in exceptional audio quality.

Performance and Efficiency

With its powerful V6 engine, the GX 550 confidently accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, while its advanced all-wheel-drive system adapts to various terrains. The electronically controlled suspension ensures a smooth ride, whether on highways or rugged trails.

However, its 13.8 L/100 km fuel consumption (U.S. cycle) is less than ideal in today’s eco-conscious market. To address this, Lexus plans to introduce a 326-PS hybrid variant next year, promising a more efficient 10 L/100 km. This hybrid powertrain is already available in the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The GX 550 is competitively priced, reflecting the fierce U.S. market. The base Premium trim starts at $64,250, while the Luxury Plus and Overtrail Plus models are priced at $81,250 and $77,250, respectively. Each comes with Lexus’s exceptional 10-year warranty, a testament to the brand’s quality and reliability.

Verdict

The Lexus GX 550 seamlessly combines luxury, off-road prowess, and strong performance, making it a standout option for buyers seeking capability and sophistication. While it’s currently exclusive to the U.S., its combination of refinement and ruggedness hints at global appeal.
