Opel Grandland Hybrid: Plug-Free Efficiency

Opel’s latest addition to the Grandland lineup brings a hybrid option that offers impressive fuel efficiency without the need for a plug.

Opel’s latest addition to the Grandland lineup brings a hybrid option that offers impressive fuel efficiency without the need for a plug. While the Grandland is spotlighted as an electric model, the hybrid variant presents an appealing alternative for drivers seeking a practical gasoline engine paired with hybrid support.

A Well-Priced Alternative

The Grandland Hybrid, starting at €36,400, is notably more affordable than its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric counterparts. The exterior differences between the Grandland Electric and the Grandland Hybrid are minimal, but under the hood, the two diverge.

Powering the front wheels is a modest 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, delivering 100 kW (136 hp) and 230 Nm of torque. To provide extra kick during acceleration, an electric motor adds 21 kW (28 hp), which helps this 1.6-ton crossover feel livelier than expected.

Practical Performance on the Road

While the hybrid may not match the electric version’s instant torque, its 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds is quite respectable. Additionally, the hybrid excels on the highway, where it can reach a maximum speed of 202 km/h, compared to the electric model’s cap at 170 km/h. At faster speeds, the Grandland Hybrid’s gasoline engine offers greater flexibility and reserves for overtaking, though the three-cylinder can feel a bit strained at high RPMs.

The hybrid’s small battery and electric motor, integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch transmission, keep fuel consumption in check. Especially in city driving, the electric motor takes on more of the workload, resulting in a combined fuel consumption of just 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers—a solid figure for a vehicle of this size.

A Well-Equipped, Spacious Interior

Inside, the Grandland Hybrid provides plenty of space for four or even five occupants. Opel has refined its interior design, balancing tactile controls with digital displays and touch or voice command options. Though some elements lean more towards Peugeot’s design, the combination works seamlessly here, with comfortable seating, multiple storage options, and convenient USB ports throughout. The heated seats in the rear and ventilated front seats add an extra touch of comfort, though rear headrests could benefit from a bit more adjustability.

The Grandland Hybrid offers a practical cargo space, with 550 liters available in the trunk, expandable to 1,645 liters when the split-folding rear seats are down. This generous space, combined with its fuel efficiency and user-friendly design, makes the Grandland Hybrid a strong option for families.

A Balanced Family Choice

While some drivers may prefer the PHEV model or look forward to a future all-wheel-drive version, the Grandland Hybrid is an excellent fit for those still uncertain about going fully electric. It provides the versatility and comfort needed for everyday use without the added complexity of charging.
