The Peugeot 408 isn’t just a head-turner; it’s about to make waves as a fully electric vehicle, expanding beyond its gasoline and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. With a starting price of under €47,000, the e-408 brings style and electrification together in a well-rounded package.
Power Meets Efficiency
Previously, the Peugeot 408 came with a modest 130-horsepower gasoline engine or a choice between two PHEV setups producing either 180 or 225 horsepower. The new all-electric e-408, however, steps up with a 154 kW (213 PS) electric motor, delivering 345 Nm of torque to the front wheels. It shares this powertrain with its sibling, the Opel Grandland. Surprisingly, the e-408’s battery pack offers just 58 kWh—resulting in a respectable range of 450 kilometers. But where the e-408 lags is its maximum charging speed of 120 kW, a bit underwhelming compared to competitors in the market.
As for performance, the e-408 reaches a top speed of 170 km/h, which is slower than both the plug-in hybrids and even the smallest 1.2-liter gasoline model. For many, however, the e-408’s strength lies in efficiency rather than outright speed.
Spacious and Practical Interior
Peugeot promises excellent comfort for longer journeys, thanks to the generous 2.79-meter wheelbase, which translates to ample rear legroom. With the rear seats folded down, the cargo space expands from 471 to a substantial 1,545 liters. You can even carry items up to 1.89 meters in length, making it a practical option for those needing extra space.
Standard features include a power-operated tailgate and stylish 20-inch alloy wheels, enhancing both practicality and appearance. Inside, the e-408 boasts Peugeot’s signature compact steering wheel with the instrument cluster positioned above it, providing a more ergonomic driving experience. There’s also a central touchscreen for controlling various vehicle functions. The comfort doesn’t stop there: heated seats, available ventilation, and an optional massage function elevate the cabin experience, while sound insulation is enhanced through double-glazed front windows and thicker front and rear glass.
A Suite of Safety and Tech
Priced from €46,600, the Peugeot e-408 comes loaded with a comprehensive suite of safety features. The car is equipped with six cameras and nine radar sensors, powering a total of 30 driver assistance systems. These include adaptive high beams, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, a night-vision camera, and rear parking sensors, among others. These systems work together to offer peace of mind, making the e-408 not only a stylish but also a highly secure choice for drivers.
The Peugeot e-408 might not set speed records, but it delivers a balanced package of style, practicality, and cutting-edge technology in a growing electric market.
