BMW has refreshed its 2 Series Gran Coupé with updates that go deeper than a typical facelift. We took the top-tier M235 xDrive Gran Coupé for a spin – complete with all-wheel drive.
Subtle Changes, Big Impact
The 2 Series Gran Coupé, produced at BMW’s Leipzig plant, often flies under the radar compared to the brand’s more prominent SUVs, the 3 Series/4 Series duo, or its luxury flagships. Yet BMW remains committed to its compact lineup, including the 1 Series and its close relative, the 2 Series Gran Coupé, which gets a significant refresh for 2025.
The updates give the 4.55-meter-long sedan a sleeker, more appealing profile, especially with its gently tapering rear end. Redesigned LED lighting elements front and back further enhance its sporty look. However, even with the largest available wheels (225/45 R18), the Gran Coupé’s stance feels more athletic-student than professional athlete.
Inside the Cabin: Minimalist with a splash of Color
Inside, the updates echo those of the 1 Series sibling. BMW’s latest-generation curved display, slightly angled toward the driver, modernizes the cockpit. Meanwhile, a tri-colored contrast stitch on the dashboard adds a touch of warmth to the otherwise minimalist interior. Unlike some competitors, BMW continues to forgo a passenger-side display.
A curious omission, given the M235 xDrive’s price point, is leather seating. Instead, the €60,000 model opts for a mix of synthetic leather and Alcantara – a puzzling decision for a luxury brand. Up front, the seating is spacious and supportive, but the rear seats accommodate only two passengers comfortably, especially if they lack long legs. Folding the 40:20:40 split rear bench expands the modest 430-liter trunk for larger or longer items.
Under the Hood: Power with a Catch
The most surprising update is the reduced output of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. To meet stricter emissions standards, power has dropped slightly to 221 kW (300 PS). Yet, from behind the wheel, this loss feels negligible. The engine remains eager, delivering a satisfying growl for a four-cylinder while ensuring dynamic performance befitting the M-lite badge.
Thanks to all-wheel drive and 400 Nm of torque available from 2,000 rpm, the Gran Coupé sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed capped at 250 km/h. Whether darting through city traffic or cruising on the autobahn, the M235 impresses with its direct steering and confident handling, even on wet roads. The power is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with driving modes that let you tweak its behavior to match your mood.
Efficiency Meets Fun
The official fuel consumption of 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers isn’t groundbreaking in today’s electrified era, but it’s acceptable for a sporty compact sedan that weighs over 1.6 tons. And while the M235 xDrive Gran Coupé’s base price of €59,700 might seem steep, it’s clear you’re paying for M-inspired performance and a comprehensive driving experience.
For fans of compact, dynamic sedans, the M235 xDrive Gran Coupé delivers plenty of thrills while reminding us why BMW’s tagline remains “The Ultimate Driving Machine.”
