Kia has already brought its larger models into the electric age. Now it’s time for the smaller classes. At the heart of this shift is the new Kia EV4, aimed squarely at rivals like the Opel Astra Electric, Peugeot e-308, and Cupra Born. With a range of up to 625 kilometers, it promises to be more than just another compact contender.
Compact Format, Big Ambitions
At 4.45 meters long, the EV4 isn’t a crossover like the EV3 with which it shares platform, interior design, and drivetrain. Instead, it’s pitched directly against Europe’s compact EVs. Priced from just under €38,000 with the smaller 58-kWh battery, it also makes history as Kia’s first Europe-built EV. The hatchback leads the way, while a sleeker fastback version is reserved for Asian markets.
At launch, buyers can choose front-wheel drive with two battery sizes, 58.3 and 81.4 kWh, both paired to a 150 kW / 204 PS motor. From next year, two all-wheel-drive versions will follow, producing 265 and 292 PS respectively, each linked to the larger battery.

Charging: A Weak Spot
Unlike Kia’s bigger EV siblings boasting lightning-fast 800-volt tech, the EV4 makes do with more modest numbers. Fast-charging tops out at 128 kW, while the smaller battery is limited to just 102 kW. For a 2026 model year car, that’s underwhelming for anyone who doesn’t rely solely on home charging.
Still, efficiency is a highlight. In testing, the larger battery delivered real-world consumption of 15 to 17.4 kWh/100 km, depending on whether it rode on 17- or 19-inch wheels. That translates to a usable range of 470–540 km. On the road, the EV4 feels lively enough despite its 1.9-ton curb weight and modest power. Only on the autobahn does it falter, limited to a 170 km/h top speed. Noise insulation, however, is excellent. Double glazing and engine-bay damping keep the cabin hushed even at speed.

Behind the Wheel
Switching between the four driving modes produces clear differences in throttle response, though the steering remains overly light and artificial. Comfort is where the EV4 shines: the suspension is tuned well, especially with 17-inch wheels that absorb rougher impacts better than the jittery 19-inch options. Drivers will also notice torque tugging at the wheel. 283 Nm of pull makes itself felt, particularly in corners.
The braking system earns praise, with solid pedal feedback that avoids the dreaded spongey feel. Variable regenerative braking adds further flexibility, easily adjustable in multiple stages.
Cabin and Comfort
Step inside the 4.43-meter-long hatch, and the interior is cleanly designed. Three displays, two 12.3-inch units and a smaller five-inch screen for climate controls, dominate the dashboard, though the latter can be partly obscured by the steering wheel. Most other functions are handled via central physical buttons, a nod to user-friendliness.
Kia highlights the use of sustainable, recyclable materials, though some surfaces feel a little hard. Highlights include a clear head-up display (part of a €1,690 options package), ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a spacious open console between the front chairs with charging ports and smartphone storage.

Space and Practicality
With nearly 90-degree rear door openings, entry and exit are effortless. Cabin space is generous front and rear, thanks to a wheelbase that’s 7.5 cm longer than the EV3. The 435-liter trunk leads its class, expandable to 1,415 liters with seats folded flat. Curiously, unlike the EV3, there’s no front trunk for stowing cables.
The Verdict
The EV4 Long Range may not set charging benchmarks, but with its class-leading range, roomy interior, and competitive pricing, Kia has delivered a serious challenger in the compact EV segment. Starting at €43,240, it’s priced aggressively against its rivals, helping Kia take a big step forward in the heart of Europe’s EV market.
